Overview

The TensarTech TW1 Wall System delivers substantial savings, as well as long-term durability and architectural versatility, compared to other types of retaining wall systems.

This system is comprised of a pre-cast concrete modular block facing, securely connected to Tensar uniaxial geogrids, which reinforce the soil behind it to create a stable structure with up to 120 years of design life.

The TW1 concrete facing blocks, which form an 86° face angle, are simply dry-laid. No propping of the face or cranes is required for the construction. The weight of the standard 150mm high block is suitable for manual handling. Their block geometry allows corners, curves, stairs and other features to be incorporated easily, with a variety of colours available.

System Components

The TensarTech TW1 System includes advice, training and services from Tensar’s design and on-site teams, as well as three specific products.  These are Tensar uniaxial geogrids (high-density polyethylene with extremely high durability and no corrosion potential), TW1 modular blocks (high strength, durable factory-produced pre-cast concrete blocks) and Tensar TW1 connectors – for high-strength connection between blocks and geogrid reinforcement.

Why choose Tensar’s TW1 Wall System?

Single-Source Solution

The components of the TensarTech TW1 system have been specifically designed to work together for optimum efficiency and performance. High-strength, low-absorption concrete blocks, high-shear strength connectors, and Tensar's uniaxial geogrids work together to form a reinforced soil wall system that meets or exceeds the industry standard.

In addition, Tensar’s experienced engineers, using our sophisticated TensarSoil software, can provide everything from free application suggestions to a full design and supply service.

No Fuss - No Risk. Simple and Rapid Construction

TensarTech TW1 systems require no heavy lifting equipment due to its interlocking block design. This simplifies the placement and alignment of the geogrid reinforcement while ensuring the connection to the block face can be made without specialist skills. The rest is straightforward earthworks.

Typically, no structural foundation is necessary, which keeps mobilisation costs low and staged construction easily accommodated. Tensar can provide detailed construction drawings as part of the design and supply service, and site assistance is available when needed.

Extra Strength with Tensar Uniaxial Geogrid

Tensar uniaxial geogrids are manufactured from select grades of HDPE resins that are highly oriented and resist deformation when subjected to even high tensile loads for long periods of time. Their open aperture structure interlocks with natural fill materials, making them ideal for reinforced soil applications like the Tensar TW1. The high pH associated with concrete blocks does not affect the durability and functionality of HDPE geogrid reinforcement during a life of up to 120 years.

Independent Assessment and Approval

The TensarTech TW1 System and selected Tensar uniaxial geogrids have been certified by the British Board of Agrément (BBA) and awarded HAPAS approval. Highway Authorities Product Approval Scheme (HAPAS) was set up in 1995 to recognise innovative products and systems used in UK highway construction. The Certificate or Report provides highway engineers with product performance, design and installation data invaluable to the product choice and project planning processes. The BBA certifies that Tensar geogrids and the TensarTech TW1 system have been evaluated independently as fit for their intended use.
