Tensar proposed a mechanically stabilised layer (MSL) using multiaxial geogrid at the interface of granular sub-base and wet mix macadam layer. Incorporation of the MSL formed a flexural stiff layer and allowed for an optimal cost effective pavement section with the same performance as a conventional pavement. Tensar was involved in providing technical support to obtain the approvals, explain the research and validation, and also provided site training on geogrid installation for the contractor’s engineers.

Client's Challenge

The original flexible pavement proposal required cement stabilisation to achieve the 36 million standard axle. The client was facing an issue in controlling the quality of cement stabilised sub-base. The inconsistency in quality was driving the project time and cost high and may affect the pavement performance. Thus, the client approached Tensar for an optimal and cost effective solution.

Tensar Solution

Tensar designed a mechanically stabilised layer using multiaxial geogrid between the granular sub-base and wet mix macadam. This MSL created a stiff layer that matched conventional pavement performance at lower cost. Tensar supported the approval process, validated the research, and trained contractors on geogrid installation.
