Tensar Academy : On The Preconsolidation Pressure: Experience Based on Testing The Holocene Marine Clay of Peninsular Malaysia

In this webinar we investigate the issue of calculating settlement of an embankment on soft and compressible clay, based on a specific case study. The clay deposit is the Holocene upper marine clay at a site in north peninsular Malaysia, at Juru. A trial embankment was built there as part of the site investigation for the North-South Expressway project. Calculation of settlement requires a good assessment of the preconsolidation pressure in order to get a representative result. This was determined using various methods, based on: oedometer tests, undrained shear strength and piezocone test data. The study looks at the effect of errors and mis-interpretation on calculated settlement by making comparison with the measured settlement of the embankment.
